Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for 50 individuals, including three Americans, who are accused of participating in a coup attempt in Congo. The trial, which began in June, involves charges such as terrorism, murder, and criminal association. The failed coup targeted the presidential palace and a close ally of President Felix Tshisekedi, resulting in six deaths. One of the accused, Christian Malanga, was fatally shot after live-streaming the attack on social media. The American defendants include Marcel Malanga, a 21-year-old U.S. citizen, and two others who allegedly played a role in the attack. Congo reinstated the death penalty earlier this year to combat violence and militant attacks in the country.
